Kitchen remodeling can be a tricky business. You can easily achieve a good looking kitchen with many sources like Home Depot, Lowe’s, kitchen showroom places and more. The question many times is whether the kitchen is just going to be the place to store your dishes and cook or is it a place that’s going to work and function well for you? Even when it comes to custom cabinetry, the person who designs the kitchen remodel may or may not have been educated in kitchen design. This is where Heritage Home excels.
Kitchen remodeling and design isn’t just putting the dishwasher next to the sink, there are many more elements to consider to assure that your kitchen is designed with cooking, cleaning and storage in mind. In addition, I feel that more than one person should be able to work in a kitchen without stepping all over each other.
Whenever I remodel a kitchen I always look for the main 3 elements; work flow, work spaces and work triangles. Work flow is rather simple, it’s looking for where the flow of work is being directed. For example, looking at where the dining room is will tell you where the dirty dishes will be coming from and I design the flow from that direction. Work spaces or stations are places in your kitchen that you perform a certain task like washing dishes, putting away dishes, cooking and food prep. These work spaces will either determine work flow or the work flow may determine where I place the work spaces. Then after considering the flow of work and where the work spaces will be, I then tie it all together with work triangles. A properly designed work triangle will place three work stations within a few steps of each other. There are usually more that one work triangle in kitchen remodeling designs so the trick part is to make sure that they don’t overlap too often. If I have the space and the budget, my clients find that more than one person can work comfortably in my kitchen remodels.
